Data is presented on the number of prisoners and the extent to which prisons in England and Wales are overcrowded.
Abstract
The prison populations in England and Wales numbered 45,864 on March 31, 1992. As the system is designed to house 45,469, the system was only 1 percent overcrowded. However, these types of establishments are considerably more overcrowded than the average because overcrowding is concentrated in local prisons. Local prisons, which had 11,902 places but 15,456 prisoners on March 31, 1992, were 30 percent overcrowded. Eleven prisons were more than 50 percent overcrowded. The 20 most overcrowded prisons are identified. By the year 2000, the total prison population is projected to increase to 57,500.
