EXAMINATION OF THE CURRENT STATUS OF PRISONS AND PRISON MANAGEMENT AND OF KEY ISSUES ARISING FROM THE USE OF IMPRISONMENT AS A PENAL METHOD.
Abstract
THE IDEOLOGY OF IMPRISONMENT AND THE PRINCIPAL LINES OF CRITICISM DIRECTED AT THE PRISON ARE DISCUSSED. A DETAILED CRITIQUE OF THE 'SCHOOLS OF CRIME' THEORY IS PRESENTED AS IS A CRITIQUE OF ITS MODERN COUNTERPART, THE PRISONIZATION HYPOTHESIS - THE NOTION THAT PRISONS INSTILL DISTINCT INMATE ATTITUDES AND MORES. ISSUES SUCH AS THE ROLE OF THE PRISON GUARD, WORK IN PRISONS, AND THE USE OF PRISONERS AS RESEARCH SUBJECTS FOR MEDICAL EXPERIMENTS ARE DISCUSSED AS ARE THE PRISONERS' RIGHTS MOVEMENT AND ITS IMPLICATIONS FOR THE FUTURE OF PRISON ADMINISTRATION. SPECIFIC RECOMMENDATIONS FOR CHANGES FOR PRISON REFORM ARE MADE THROUGHOUT AND OBSTACLES TO CHANGE IN THE PRISON SYSTEM ARE TREATED IN THE FINAL CHAPTER.
