IT IS CONCLUDED THAT GUIDELINES FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS ARE LACKING BECAUSE OF A LIMITED KNOWLEDGE BASE. MULTIDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH OF HIGH QUALITY IS CONSIDERED THE FIRST REMEDIAL STEP.
Abstract
THIS PAPER PRESENTS THE ASSUMPTIONS UNDERLYING THE APPROACH TO PRISON RESEARCH REPRESENTED IN THE NINE PAPERS PRESENTED AT THE 139TH ANNUAL MEETING OF THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF SCIENCE. IT IS ASSUMED THAT THE EXISTING PRISON SYSTEM IS INEFFECTIVE, BECAUSE THE RECIDIVISM IS UNACCEPTABLY HIGH. IT IS STATED THERE ARE NO ADEQUATE GUIDELINES FOR PRISON REFORM BECAUSE RESEARCH TO THE PRESENT HAS BEEN RESTRICTED IN PERSPECTIVE, SCOPE, AND DEPTH. MULTIDISCIPLINARY EXCHANGE OF INFORMATION ABOUT RESEARCH PROGRAMS AND METHODOLOGIES, TOGETHER WITH CRITICAL INTERCHANGE IS CONSIDERED IMPORTANT FOR THE FORMATION OF REFORM GUIDELINES....RCB
