This volume explores the practice and policy of prison sex through original research on both consensual and nonconsensual intercourse, treatment of sexual assault victims, staff training, and the management of inmates with HIV/AIDS.
Abstract
The subject of sex in prison continues to be a forbidden topic, ignored by both scientists and society. In this volume, 10 research articles present valuable information and data in the area of sex in prison. A review of the articles’ subject matter include: (1) an introduction and overview of life and sex in prison; (2) the sexual hierarchies that form in prison; (3) consensual and nonconsensual sexual behavior; (4) prison staff attitudes and male rape; (5) the treatment of sexual assault victims in prison; (6) training staff on inmate sexual assault for institutional safety and security; (7) the management of inmates with HIV/AIDS; and (8) policies on masturbation and conjugal visitation. The data, interview excerpts, and practice and policy recommendations presented throughout the various works offer a reminiscent picture of the United States prison systems and their effect on society.
