This study examined how prison sexual offenders compared to other sex offenders in rearrest rates following release from prison.
Abstract
Findings from the study indicate that sexual offending behavior in prison was a significant risk indicator for new sexual, violent, and other arrests in the community following release. The findings support institutional treatment to minimize prison sex offenders' risk upon release. Due to several identified study limitations, additional research was recommended. The extent to which inmates who perpetrate sex offenses in prison pose a risk to the community upon release is unknown, with many factors adding to the complexity of studying the issue. This study evaluated formerly incarcerated male sex offenders' community risk by comparing the postrelease arrest, filing, and incarceration rates of prison sex offenders with convicted and factual basis offenders.
