This report presents statistics on the convicted and unconvicted prisoners in Sri Lanka in 1993, noting that 61.8 percent of persons entering prison during the year were sentenced for drug law offenses and excise offenses.
Abstract
In addition, 83.2 percent of persons sentenced to prison received sentences of less than 1 year. Admissions to the training school for youthful offenders increased, while the number of female prisoners declined. The report lists the prisons and presents statistics on the numbers and classifications of correctional personnel, the admissions and numbers of unconvicted prisoners, the average length of time spent on remand, the numbers of convicted offender admitted to each institution from 1989-93, inmate characteristics such as age and race, types of offenses involved, capital punishment, and juvenile corrections.
