This article discusses programs, parole and handling of special classes of inmates in the Polish prison system.
Abstract
Employment of inmates accustoms them to work and provides professional training, as well as maintaining and developing their physical and mental capabilities. Inmates perform cleaning and auxiliary duties, including administrative and maintenance work in their institution; unpaid public work; duties at factories and subsidiary establishments within the prison; and duties with contracting parties. Education is also part of the Polish prison system's social readaptation process. Inmates who do not have a primary education or vocation are required to participate in study courses. The system provides parole in cases where there are grounds to expect an inmate will successfully adapt to the outside world. The system has special rehabilitation approaches and more liberal treatment for women inmates. Inmates with mental disorders are treated individually in separate wards.
