PRESENTED ARE INTERVIEWS WITH PRISONERS, RELATIVES OF PRISONERS, CRIMINAL JUSTICE OFFICIALS, AND CORRECTIONAL PERSONNEL WHICH INDICATE THE IRRATIONALITY OF THE PRISON SYSTEM IN FRANCE. ALSO PRESENTED ARE FIRST-PERSON ACCOUNTS BY THE AUTHOR OF PRISON CONDITIONS AND THE EFFECTS OF IMPRISONMENT. DISCUSSED ARE TYPES OF PRISONS, INMATE SERVICES AND PROGRAMS, PRISON ADMINISTRATION, AND INMATE SUBCULTURE.
