This manual is intended to provide a guide to incarcerated parents, prison administrators and staff members, and child development and parent education professionals interested in developing and conducting parenting education and support programs for incarcerated parents.

Abstract

The manual is also intended as a resource for academicians, students, legislators, other government officials, and the public to promote learning about the impact of incarceration on all family members and the importance of considering that impact and children's needs in particular in establishing prison policies. The information and suggestions are based on the experience of the authors in developing and operating Project HIP (Helping Incarcerated Parents) at the Maine Correctional Center in Windham. The guidelines explain how to start a program, the program model used in Project HIP, and the role of corrections agencies and other organizations.
