COLLECTION OF ARTICLES DETAILING THE AREAS IN WHICH PRISONERS ARE SEEKING RIGHTS, THE TECHNIQUES OF AVAILABLE LITIGATION, AND TRENDS IN CORRECTIONAL REFORM.
Abstract
THE AIM OF THIS SOURCEBOOK IS TO COMPILE A COMPREHENSIVE COLLECTION OF ARTICLES BY PERSONS WHO ARE ACTIVE IN THE PRISONERS' RIGHTS FIELD, ENCOMPASSING LEGAL, HISTORICAL, SOCIOLOGICAL, AND POLITICAL PERSPECTIVES. CONTRIBUTIONS ARE WRITTEN BY SOME OF THE LEADING ATTORNEYS IN THE PRISONERS' RIGHTS FIELD TODAY. OTHER, BROADER ARTICLES ARE CONTRIBUTED NOT ONLY BY LAWYERS BUT ALSO BY JUDGES, STATE ATTORNEYS GENERAL, CORRECTIONAL ADMINISTRATORS, PRISONERS, EX-OFFENDERS, SOCIOLOGISTS, LEGISLATORS, AND HISTORIANS. THE FIRST ARTICLES DISCUSS THE HISTORICAL ROOTS AND DEVELOPMENT OF OUR NATION'S PRISONS, GIVE A PERSPECTIVE ON THE NEW POLITICAL AND RACIAL CONSCIOUSNESS FOUND IN MANY OF TODAY'S PRISONS, AND SET FORTH TYPICAL EXPERIENCES IN THE CRIMINAL CONVICTION PROCESS WHICH OFTEN LAY THE FOUNDATION FOR THE OUTRAGE AND RESENTMENT EXHIBITED BY SO MANY PRISONERS. THE SECOND SECTION CONTAINS A SERIES OF ARTICLES WHICH DISCUSS BOTH THE SUBSTANTIVE AND PROCEDURAL ASPECTS OF LITIGATING PRISONERS' RIGHTS SUITS, WITH SAMPLE PLEADINGS IN THE APPENDIX TO AID THE LITIGATOR. THE THIRD SECTION IN THE SOURCEBOOK DEALS WITH PROBLEMS OF SPECIAL GROUPS IN PRISON - WOMEN, JUVENILES, SPANISH-SPEAKING INMATES, AND THE CRIMINALLY INSANE WHILE THE FOURTH AND FINAL SECTION DEALS WITH TRENDS FOR THE FUTURE IN PRISONERS' RIGHTS. THE BOOK CONCLUDES WITH A COMPREHENSIVE CHAPTER SUMMARIZING NEW TRENDS IN PRISON AND PAROLE AND AN ARTICLE ON ALTERNATIVES TO TODAY'S PRISONS. THE SOURCEBOOK IS AIMED PRIMARILY AT THE LEGAL COMMUNITY, BUT IT SHOULD BE OF INTEREST TO PRISONERS, CONCERNED COMMUNITY GROUPS, PENOLOGISTS, SOCIAL SCIENTISTS, AND PRISON ADMINISTRATORS.
