This report presents 1982 data and analysis on the number and movement of prisoners in all State and Federal correctional institutions.
Abstract
The analysis assesses the sharp growth in prison population during 1982 and surveys developments in the correctional field. The report also examines changes in the geographic distribution of prisoners; the composition of the inmate population by race, sex, and Hispanic origin; incarceration rates for minorities; and the rates of various types of admissions and releases. Admission and release data are restricted to 'sentenced' inmates, but other data include inmates with no sentence. Appendix I contains 20 tables of data, and Appendix II describes the data collection method and the completeness of the response to various sections of the questionnaire, a sample of which is included. Notes explaining the degree of each jurisdiction's compliance with the criteria and definitions of the National Prisoner Statistics program are in Appendix III. A special table in Appendix IV shows the number of prisoners in State and Federal institutions at yearend 1925-82.
