These historical documents on prisons and corrections, many of which are more than two centuries old, portray prison conditions and prison social-development functions.
Abstract
Documents on punishment encompass sanctions for various offenses and for juveniles as well as other types of offenders. They also deal with prison conditions in various U.S. States as well as in some foreign countries at particular periods of history. Documents pertaining to inmates focus on such issues as suicide, lynching, inmate safety, and inmate complaints and offenses. Prison construction, prisoners of war, parole, prison disorders, and inmate education are also discussed in a number of documents. The book concludes with the presentation of the Report of the President's Task Force on Prisoner Rehabilitation. The documents are presented without editorial comment, except for a preface that makes a general observation on the unchanging character of prisons. Selected inmate statistics are presented for various States (1794-1905).
