This report provides data on convicted and detained prisoners in Sri Lanka for the years 1994-2004.
Abstract
Some of the data are only for the years 2000-2004 and 2002-2004. Data on detained prisoners address direct admission by institution, age, literacy, race, religion, and marital status. Other data on detained prisoners cover length of time in custody, the daily average population, and annual admissions for the years 1996-2004. Similar data are provided for convicted prisoners, with the addition of tables that show the number of convicted prisoners according to previous convictions (2001-2004), gender, type of offense, and discharge (2002-2004). Nine tables address direct admissions to the Training School for Youthful Offenders (2000-2004). Admissions are noted according to age, place of residence, marital status of the youth's parents, other family characteristics, mental status, and literacy. Data on prisoners sentenced to death show direct admissions by sex, race, religion, marital status, literacy, district, residence, previous sentences, previous convictions, income, personal habits, and occupation (2000-2004). Data are also provided on prisoners released on home leave, a license scheme, and work release (1994-2004). Two tables show the value of industrial and agricultural output by prisoners. Data on drug offenders pertain to types of offenses, types of drugs, race, religion, age, educational level, marital status, sentence length, and whether or not parents are alive (1993-2004). General information addresses escapes, fine defaults, treatment in prisons and civil hospitals, death rate, and the average cost per prisoner.
