This bulletin of 2008 prison statistics for Sri Lanka provides basic information on convicted and unconvicted inmates in Sri Lanka's prisons.
Abstract
The statistics pertain to direct admissions; length of stay; daily average number; and race, age, religion, marital status, literacy, and offenses of inmates held in various types of confinement. The types of confinement covered in this report are closed prisons, remand prisons, open prison camps, work camps, work release centers, and lock-ups. Closed prisons have maximum-security conditions. Remand prisons are closed prisons that hold only remand prisoners prior to case disposition. Open prison camps have no perimeter walls and hold selected prisoners under minimum-security conditions. Work camps hold prisoners for a short or medium term under medium-security conditions. Work release centers are buildings without perimeter walls or security devices. They provide lodging for a night to prisoners sent out on work release under the Work Release Scheme. Lock-ups are prison buildings located near courts, in order to house inmates with pending cases for 1 or 2 days before their trial dates. Fourteen tables provide data on unconvicted prisoners, and 26 tables provide data on convicted prisoners. Nine tables present data on direct admissions to the training school for youthful offenders for 1998-2007 and 2003-2007. Thirteen tables provide data on prisoners sentenced to death. Other tables present data on prisoners released on the Work Release Scheme, License Scheme, and Home Leave Scheme, as well as drug offenders. Other data pertain to the value of industrial and agricultural output by prisoners, number of prisoner deaths and the death rate (1998-2007), expenditures (2003-2007), and the number of prisoners receiving medical treatment in prisons and hospitals (2003-2007).
