ANALYSIS OF PRISONS AND PRESENT MEANS OF REHABILITATION INDICATES A NEED FOR FEWER PRISONS AND FOR REHABILITATION OF PRISONERS ON A MORE SELECTIVE BASIS.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR BEGINS WITH A DISCUSSION OF THE ORIGIN AND HISTORY OF PRISONS. COMMENTS ARE MADE ON THE INEQUALITY OF PUNISHMENT AND THE PURPOSE OF PRISON IN MODERN SOCIETY. THREE CHAPTERS ARE DEVOTED TO THE PRISON POPULATION AND THE PROBLEMS AND EXTENT OF REHABILITATION. THE FINAL PORTION OF THE BOOK FOCUSES ON CRIME CAUSATION, THE TREND AWAY FROM IMPRISONMENT, THE LONG TERM PRISONER, ALTERNATIVES TO IMPRISONMENT, AND AFTERCARE SERVICES. THE AUTHOR STATES THAT THIS BOOK IS WRITTEN TO SHOW EVIDENCE OF THE FAILURE OF PENAL SYSTEMS TO REHABILITATE OFFENDERS AND THE NEED TO TREAT OFFENDERS ACCORDING TO THEIR INDIVIDUAL NEEDS.
