These 13 papers examine the theoretical and practical issues related to privatization in corrections and police in Australia and New Zealand, based on the perspectives of attorneys, researchers, labor groups, private sector representatives, and government officials.
Abstract
Individual papers focus on policy issues related to private contract management of corrections in Victoria, the major issues involved in the privatization of punishment, models of accountability for the contract management of prisons, and a labor union's perspective on labor relations in private prisons. Additional papers consider the involvement of private companies from the United States in contract management of Australian prisons, economic and qualitative aspects of prison privatization in Queensland, private sector and community involvement in the New Zealand prison system, and private prisons in the United Kingdom. Further papers discuss the legal powers of private police and security providers, the major issues involved in private policing, and future directions and reforms for private sector involvement in prisons and police.
