This text examines the development and current operation of the private security industry, with emphasis on its growing professionalism and the legal context in which it operates.
Abstract
Initial chapters trace the history of private security and its regulation, licensing, and the education and training of security professionals. Curriculum outlines currently used in training are included. Further chapters explain the applications of the law of arrest, search, and seizure to the private sector, the civil and criminal liability of security personnel; the enforcement of laws and the interpretation of evidence; and issues related to cooperation between public and private law enforcement personnel and agencies. Judicial opinions that are referenced in the text are also presented in full. Each chapter concludes with a reader exercise consisting of a summary of the facts of an actual legal case and a question about the issue involved. Answers to the reader exercises, chapter notes and discussion questions, tables, charts, examples of regulations from several States, sample forms, and index.
