Designed for parents and children to read together, this picture story for children ages 3 to 9 teaches ways to prevent sexual assault as well as recognition and reporting skills should sexual assault occur.
Abstract
An introductory page for adults presents statistics on child sexual abuse and outlines the booklet's general objectives. Adults are encouraged to impress upon children the different parts of the private zone, who can touch the private zone, the difference between good and bad touching, and the importance of children's telling responsible adults if they are threatened or experience sexual assault. The following picture story explains that bathing suits cover body parts called 'the private zone,' defines the words 'private' and 'zone,' and emphasizes that even parents and doctors need good reasons to touch a child's private zone. Simple tips for preventing sexual assault focus on the 'yell-and-tell' approach. The booklet also provides a list of indicators of child sexual assault. The number of the National Child Abuse Hotline and an annotated reading list are supplied.
