SEVERAL THEORIES AND EXPLANATIONS OF POLICE CORRUPTION PRESENTED IN RECENT SOCIAL SCIENCE LITERATURE ARE REVIEWED AND SUGGESTIONS FOR AREAS OF RESEARCH ON THE PROBLEM OF CORRUPTION ARE OFFERED.
Abstract
THEORIES OF CORRUPTION DUE TO INDIVIDUAL FAILINGS, ORGANIZATIONAL DEVIANCE, CYNICISM, LACK OF DETERRENCE, AND THE LACK OF CONSENSUS ON VICTIMLESS CRIMES AND THEIR EFFECTS ARE DISCUSSED. THE AUTHORS CONCLUDE THAT A STUDY OF THE INTERRELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN POLICE, GOVERNMENT, AND THE PUBLIC MAY LEAD TO KNOWLEDGE OF STRUCTURAL VARIABLES WHICH MAY PROVIDE AN EXPLANATION FOR THE CAUSES OF CORRUPTION.
