Abstract
AFTER-CARE SERVICES ARE DISCUSSED IN TERMS OF ASSISTING THE INMATE IN THE TRANSITION FROM PRISON TO COMMUNITY LIFE. THERE FOLLOWS A DESCRIPTION OF THE GROWING TENDENCY TO PROVIDE THE SAME SERVICES FOR BOTH STATUTORY AND VOLUNTARY AFTER-CARE, WITH A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF STATUTORY AFTER-CARE IN ORDER TO EXPLAIN WHY THE TWO EVER CAME TO BE TREATED SEPARATELY. PROBATION IS DISCUSSED IN TERMS OF ORGANIZATION, CASELOAD, RELATIONSHIP TO COURT, AND DUTIES. THE COUNTRIES COVERED IN THIS DOCUMENT ARE AUSTRIA, BELGIUM, DENMARK, FRANCE, THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY, ITALY, THE NETHERLANDS, SWEDEN, THE UNITED KINGDOM, NORWAY, AND IRELAND.
