Fourteen essays focus on the nature and mission of probation, with emphasis on the role of the justice or just deserts model, probation ideology and structure, and prospects for probation reform.
Abstract
Five chapters focus on the elements of the justice model and their relation to probation. Specific topics discussed are the role of the probation sanction within the justice model, the relationship between probation and the development of criminal law and sentencing law, principles on which justice model probation could rest, the probation field's receptivity to the justice model, and the juvenile court's relationship to the justice model. Five chapters examine how probation practice is shaped by normative and social organizational factors, with emphasis on factors that should be considered in probation reform, the probation officer's role, the use of a nontreatment model for probation practice, the possible reorganization of criminal justice functions, the professionalization of probation work, and the client behavior model of probation. Four additional chapters consider the possibilities and problems involved in reforming probation and the desirability of a leadership role for the National Institute of Corrections. Data tables and chapter reference lists are supplied.
