This overview of probation and parole considers their history, decisionmaking, criminality prediction, case management, present and future models of community supervision, and trends in philosophy and research.
Abstract
Probation and parole are examined in their interaction with the police, courts, corrections, and the community, and probation and parole in criminological theory are considered as well. Chapters trace the evolution of probation and parole practice and discuss contemporary criminal justice issues affecting probation and parole, specific probation and parole issues, and reform motivation in general. A historical review of parole decisionmaking assesses current prediction and classification strategies. This includes a case study of the consequences and implications of court-ordered prediction in Alabama and Ohio. An overview of the theory and practice of probation and parole treatment considers the translation of treatment models into practice and delineates four case management styles. The organizational styles of probation and parole are examined on a macrolevel, and three traditional organizational models that administer probation and parole from the top down are assessed. Also identified are issues that must be addressed before progress can be made in probation and parole. Figures, tables, chapter notes, and subject index.
