Abstract
THIS TEXT DEVELOPS FROM AN HISTORICAL VIEWPOINT THE CHANGES IN THE LAW AS THEY AFFECT PROBATION AND PAROLE AND OUTLINES THE LEGAL AND SOCIAL CHANGES WHICH HAVE RESULTED IN PROBATION AND PAROLE LAWS AS NOW PRACTICED. THE FIRST SECTION DEALING WITH PROBATION DISCUSSES SUCH TOPICS AS THE PRESENTENCE INVESTIGATION, THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF PROBATION, PROBATION ADMINISTRATION, RIGHTS AND DUTIES OF PROBATIONERS, AND PROBATION REVOCATION. THE SECTION ON PAROLE EXAMINES THE ADMINISTRATION AND ORGANIZATION OF PAROLE, PAROLE SELECTION, PAROLE SUPERVISION, AND PAROLE CONDITIONS AND REVOCATION. FINALLY, THE AUTHORS EXAMINE THE RESTORATION OF RIGHTS THROUGH PARDON, AMNESTY, OR OTHER FORMS OF EXECUTIVE CLEMENCY. THE APPENDIX INCLUDES A MODEL PRESENTENCE INVESTIGATION REPORT PREPARED BY THE DIVISION OF PROBATION OF THE U.S. COURTS, AND STANDARDS RELATING TO PROBATION AND PAROLE PREPARED BY THE AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION AND THE NATIONAL ADVISORY COMMISSION ON CRIMINAL JUSTICE STANDARDS AND GOALS.
