THE REASON WHY A LOT HAS BEEN SAID ABOUT THE NEED TO PROMOTE THE INVOLVEMENT OF THE COMMUNITY IN THE CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM BUT LITTLE HAS BEEN DONE IS THAT THIS THEME OF DISCUSSION APPEARS TO BE ONLY A MYTH.
Abstract
THE LACK OF COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT IN THE CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM IS BEING USED BY THE SYSTEM'S PROFESSIONAL WORKERS TO MASK SERIOUS FAILURES OF MANY CORRECTIONAL PROGRAMS. ANOTHER MYTH IS THAT OF THE COMMUNITY'S WILLINGNESS TO PARTICIPATE IN THE CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM. PUBLIC RESISTANCE TO SUCH COMMUNITY-BASED CORRECTIONS IDEAS AS HALFWAY HOUSES, SENTENCES OF PROBATION, AND RELEASE ON PROLE INDICATES THAT THE COMMUNITY-AT-LARGE IS NOT AT ALL ANXIOUS TO COME IN CONTACT WITH THE OFFENDER. THREE CASE STUDIES OF ATTEMPTS AT COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT AT VARIOUS LEVELS OF THE CANADIAN CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM ARE USED TO ILLUSTRATE THIS SITUATION. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED) --IN FRENCH.
