AN OVERVIEW OF THE BASIC PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICES OF PAROLE AND PROBATION FOR THE SUPERVISION AND TREATMENT OF JUVENILE AND ADULT OFFENDERS.
Abstract
IN AN ATTEMPT TO POINT OUT GAPS BETWEEN THEORY AND PRACTICE, THE MATERIAL PRESENTED EXTENDS FROM THE ORIGINS AND PHILOSOPHIES OF PROBATION AND PAROLE TO TECHNIQUES OF REPORT WRITING AND OF CASEWORK SUPERVISION. THE EMPHASIS IS ON THE APPLICATION OF SOCIOLOGICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL THEORY TO THE SUPERVISION AND TREATMENT OF OFFENDERS. RAISED ARE PROBLEMS FROM THE CONFLICT OF THEORY WITH ON-GOING PRACTICES AND ADMINISTRATIVE REQUIREMENTS. ADDITIONALLY, THE SUBJECTS OF EDUCATION AND TRAINING OF OFFICERS, ADMINISTRATION OF A PROBATION OR PAROLE SYSTEM, THE INTER-STATE COMPACT, THE OPERATION OF THE FEDERAL PAROLE AND PROBATION SYSTEM, AND THE ISSUE OF CENTRALIZED AUTHORITY ARE DISCUSSED. THE MATERIAL MIGHT SERVE AS A TRAINING GUIDE FOR PROSPECTIVE OFFICERS. THE APPENDICES CONTAIN EXAMPLE REPORTS REQUIRED IN PROBATION AND PAROLE WORK.
