The third edition of a comprehensive overview of probation and parole in America not only integrates theory and practice, but also discusses current legal developments and research findings.
Abstract
Following a review of classic criminology theories, the section on probation discusses services that probation agencies provide to the adult and juvenile courts. The presentence investigation and report are examined in detail, as are probation supervision issues (such as the granting of probation, probation conditions, length of supervision, and violations). A history of prisons and parole is followed by a discussion of corrections reform that addresses indeterminate and determinate sentencing, community-based corrections, and problems facing modern prisons and proposed solutions. The book examines three basic services provided by parole agencies: release, supervision, and executive clemency. Methods of treatment are delineated according to the degree to which they accept, use, or reject psychoanalytic theory and methods. Other topics addressed include the use of classification systems in probation and parole, the multiple roles of the probation/parole officer, qualities and skills needed in the profession, supervision approaches, offender employment, paraprofessionals, and volunteers. The text's final chapters focus on special programs and research, with attention to intensive supervision, specialized units, shock probation/parole, work release, halfway houses, summary parole, and felony probation. Review questions accompany each chapter. Charts, forms, case studies, over 200 references, and index.
