This probation and parole curriculum incorporates both theory and practice dimensions and is designed as a 15-week criminal justice course.
Abstract
The curriculum's 12 chapters are organized in four parts: (1) probation; (2) parole; (3) treatment and supervision in probation and parole; and (4) special programs and research. The first part covers the role of probation and parole in criminal justice, probation and the courts, juvenile courts, juvenile justice, young offenders, presentence investigations, and probation supervision. The second part presents a history of U.S. prisons and also discusses parole and the indeterminate sentence and parole administration and services. In focusing on treatment and supervision in probation and parole, the third part explores treatment theory (psychoanalytic theory and psychoanalysis, social casework, learning theory, behavior modification, reality therapy, sociological theory, and conflict theory) and examines offender classification and supervision. The final part describes special programs and research in probation that involve interstate adult and juvenile compacts, restitution, community service, specialized probation and parole units, pretrial probation and diversion, work release, halfway houses, and intermediate sanctions. This part also assesses intensive probation and parole supervision, electronic monitoring, shock incarceration, and felony probation. References, tables, and figures
