STATISTICS FOR PROBATION SERVICES AND FOR PRISONS IN INDIA ARE PRESENTED IN THIS 5-YEAR STATISTICAL STUDY COVERING THE YEARS 1964 TO 1968.
Abstract
THE NUMBER OF STIPENDIARY PROBATION OFFICERS ROSE FROM 306 TO 358 FROM 1964 TO 1968. THE NUMBER OF INQUIRIES PER PROBATION OFFICER, MADE AT THE REQUEST OF THE COURT OR CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION, ROSE FROM 124 TO 136 DURING THE SAME TIME. IN 1964, ABOUT 15,000 PERSONS REMAINED UNDER PROBATIONARY SUPERVISION WHILE IN 1968, THIS FIGURE ROSE TO 20,000. THE NUMBER OF PERSONS ON PAROLE UNDER SUPERVISION ROSE FROM 2,924 IN 1964 TO 3,978 IN 1968. ABOUT 22 PERCENT OF THE PROBATIONERS WERE 21 TO 30. APPROXIMATELY 10 PERCENT OF PROBATIONERS WERE SKILLED AND THE OTHERS WERE SEMISKILLED OR UNSKILLED. STATISTICS FOR PRISONS SHOW THAT INDIA HAS 59 CENTRAL PRISONS, 193 DISTRICT JAILS, 17 SPECIAL JAILS, 789 SUB-JAILS, 18 OPEN PRISONS, 3 MODEL PRISONS, 3 JUVENILE JAILS, AND 9 BORSTAL SCHOOLS, FOR A TOTAL OF 1,091 JAILS. PRISON STATISTICS COVER THE STATES OF ANDHRA PRADESH, GUJARAT, KERALA, MADHYA PRADESH, MAHARASHTRA, MYSORE, NAGALAND, ORISSA, PUNJAB, RAJASTHAN, TAMIL NADU, UTTAR PRADESH, DELHI, AND TRIPURA. NUMEROUS TABLES FOR BOTH PROBATION SERVICES AND PRISONS ARE INCLUDED. (PRG)
