STUDY OF RECIDIVISM RATES OF 2,726 PROBATIONERS BETWEEN 1967 AND 1971 IN RELATION TO BACKGROUND AND TREATMENT VARIABLES.
Abstract
A RESULT WHICH BECAME CLEAR THROUGH THE STUDY WAS THE NECESSITY OF DIFFERENTIATING BETWEEN SUCCESS AND FAILURE RATES DURING PROBATION AND SUCCESS AND FAILURE RATES AFTER THE COMPLETION OF PROBATION. DURING PROBATION, THE STUDY FOUND THAT EMPLOYMENT STATUS (WHETHER THE PROBATIONER WAS EMPLOYED, UNEMPLOYED OR A STUDENT), OCCUPATION, THE TIME OF THE MOST RECENT PREVIOUS CONVICTION IN RELATION TO THE PROBATION CONVICTION (SIX MONTHS, ONE YEAR, TWO YEARS), AND MARITAL STATUS WERE THE VARIABLES THAT BEST DIFFERENTIATED BETWEEN SUCCESSES AND FAILURES. AFTER PROBATION, THE ONLY VARIABLE THAT ACCOUNTED FOR ANY IMPORTANT DEGREE OF ASSOCIATION WAS RACIAL ORIGIN. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
