Abstract
RESIDENCE IN A PROBATION HOSTEL TAKES PLACE AS ONE OF THE TERMS OF A PROBATION ORDER. RESIDENCE IS LIMITED TO TWELVE MONTHS FROM DATE OF THE ORDER. THE PROGRAM IS VOLUNTARY AND CONSENT OF PROBATIONER MUST BE OBTAINED. TO QUALIFY FOR HOSTEL TREATMENT THE COURT MUST DETERMINE THAT SUCH A PERIOD AWAY FROM HOME IS DESIRABLE. AFTER IT IS ESTABLISHED THAT THERE IS A VACANCY, THE PROBATION OFFICER SENDS DETAILS ABOUT THE PROBATIONER TO THE WARDEN WHO AGREES TO ACCEPT THE PROBATIONER IF THE COURT DESIRES HIS STAY THERE. THE DEGREE OF SUCCESS TO DATE HAS DEPENDED UPON QUALITY OF THE PERSONNEL INVOLVED, ESPECIALLY THAT OF THE WARDENS OF THE HOSTELS.
