PROFESSIONAL CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS' CLIENTS DID NOT HAVE SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER SUCCESS RATES IN TERMS OF RECIDIVISM AND SOCIAL ADJUSTMENT THAN CLIENTS SUPERVISED BY AN EXPERIMENTAL GROUP OF INDIGENOUS PARAPROFESSIONALS.
Abstract
THE EVALUATION OF THE PROBATION OFFICER CASE AIDE PROJECT (POCA) THAT TOOK PLACE IN THE NORTHERN ILLINOIS FEDERAL PROBATION DISTRICT CONCLUDES THAT THE EMPLOYMENT OF INDIGENOUS PARAPROFESSIONALS IN FEDERAL PROBATION IS OPERATIONALLY FEASIBLE AND IS A PROMISING ADJUNCT TO PROFESSIONAL CORRECTIONAL SUPERVISION. SEVERAL OF THE ADVANTAGES TO USING PROBATION OFFICERS AIDES (POA'S) ARE THAT THE SOCIO-CULTURAL DISTANCE BETWEEN CLIENT AND COUNSELOR IS DIMINISHED AND THAT THE POA'S ARE MUCH MORE PHYSICALLY ACCESSIBLE TO THEIR CLIENTS THAN PROBATION OFFICERS. THE REPORT ON PHASE II OF THE POCA PROJECT IS RETRIEVABLE UNDER NCJ-015563.
