RESULTS OF A SURVEY UNDERTAKEN TO COLLECT VITAL STATISTICS ON CANADIAN PROBATION OFFICERS AND TO SEEK THE OFFICERS' OPINIONS ON THEIR TRAINING, WORK CONDITIONS, PROCEDURES, AND CIVIL RIGHTS OF JUVENILES.
Abstract
A TOTAL OF 255 QUESTIONNAIRES WERE RECEIVED FROM JUVENILE PROBATION OFFICERS. RESPONSES WERE ANALYZED WITH RESPECT TO THE FOLLOWING FACTORS; AGE; SEX; YEARS OF EXPERIENCE; EDUCATIONAL TRAINING; SPECIAL TRAINING; TYPE OF TRAINING DESIRED; CASELOAD; AND ACCEPTABLE CASELOAD. THE SURVEY ALSO SOLICITED INFORMATION ON THE OFFICERS' CRITERIA FOR RECOMMENDING PROBATION, INSTITUTIONALIZATION, PSYCHIATRIC EXAMINATION, AND DISCHARGE; AND THE RELATIVE IMPORTANCE OF CRITERIA FOR PRE-DISPOSITION REPORT. FINALLY, OFFICERS WERE ASKED TO STATE THEIR OPINIONS ON THE RIGHTS OF JUVENILES DURING COURT PROCEEDINGS.
