A REPORT ON THE CURRENT STATE OF PROBATION SERVICES IN INDIA WITH STATISTICS PRESENTED FOR THIRTEEN STATES AND TWO HUNDRED SIXTY-ONE DISTRICTS.
Abstract
A HIGH PERCENTAGE OF OFFENDERS IN INDIA ARE SENTENCED TO TERMS OF LESS THAN SIX MONTHS AND MANY OF THESE WOULD UNDOUBTABLY BENEFIT MORE FROM PROBATION THAN PRISON. THERE IS, HOWEVER, A SERIOUS LACK OF OFFICERS WHICH HAS PREVENTED THE ADEQUATE USE OF PROBATION. GREAT EFFORTS ARE BEING MADE TO REMEDY THIS SITUATION AND DEVELOP THE SERVICE. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
