An analysis of the work and working conditions of probation officers in West Bengal, India revealed numerous problems.
Abstract
Topics covered included educational qualifications, experience required for recruitment, personnel practices, the population and geographic area served, caseloads, training, and personalities. The analysis indicated the need to increase the minimum qualifications in accordance with the standards of the American Correctional Association, which are followed in some other states in India. Working conditions also need to improve. In addition, probation officers often have to cover districts of up to 6,000 square kilometers; jurisdictions need to be restructured. Other needs are for more clearly stated goal perceptions and more efficient management. These measures are essential to improving the performance level of the probation officers and the success of the West Bengal probation system. 10 references
