Abstract
The resource for problem-solving tips is entitled "Problem-Solving Tips: A Guide to Reducing Crime and Disorder Through Problem-Solving Partnerships." This guidebook, which is part of the Problem-Oriented Guides for Police series, instructs communities in using the SARA model (scanning, analysis, and assessment) for building problem-solving partnerships. Seven resources on problem-solving tools pertain to the analysis of repeat victimization, enhancement of the problem-solving capacity of crime analysis units, the implementation of responses to problems, partnering with businesses to address public safety problems, the nature of and responses to "risky facilities," the use of environmental design in crime-prevention problem-solving, and the use of offender interviews in police problem-solving. The problem-specific guides for policing that are available provide guidance on problem-solving approaches to specific problems, such as abandoned vehicles, acquaintance rape of college students, the robbery of convenience stores, and the robbery of taxi drivers. The response guides available focus on research and strategies used by police and communities to reduce crime and disorder. Among the responses examined in the resources are the benefits and consequences of police crackdowns, closing streets and alleys to reduce crime, crime-prevention publicity campaigns, shifting and sharing responsibility for public safety problems, "sting" operations, and video surveillance of public places. A chart is provided to show the title, funding organization, subject, media (pdf, text, and html) in which the resource is available, and abstract for each resource. Alphabetical and subject indexes are also provided.
