THE ARTICLE DISCUSSES THE POSSIBILITIES OF INTERVENTION OPEN TO PRISON MANAGEMENT, IN PARTICULAR TO THE MEDICAL STAFF, IN CASES OF PROLONGED INDIVIDUAL OR COLLECTIVE HUNGER STRIKES.
Abstract
BASING HIS OBSERVATION ON THE EXPERIENCE IN FRANCE, WHERE THE PHENOMENON REACHED SERIOUS PROPORTIONS WITH COLLECTING STRIKES OF ALGERIAN PRISONERS DURING THE YEARS 1957-1960, THE AUTHOR EXAMINES THE RELEVANT LEGAL PROVISIONS AND THEIR APPLICABILITY WITH RESPECT TO INDIVIDUAL PRISONERS' RIGHTS. COMPARISON IS ALSO MADE WITH ANALOGOUS PROVISIONS IN THE SPANISH PENITENTIARY SYSTEM. THE SYMPTOMATOLOGY ASSOCIATED WITH PROLONGED HUNGER STRIKES IS DESCRIBED AND SUGGESTIONS ARE MADE FOR CONTINUOUS MEDICAL SUPERVISION AND TESTING. ACCORDING TO THE AUTHOR'S VIEW THE IMPERATIVES OF PROFESSIONAL ETHICS SHOULD NOT PREVENT PROMPT MEDICAL INTERVENTION IN CASES OF SERIOUS DANGER TO THE LIFE OF THE PRISONER. --IN SPANISH
