This paper examines the impact of urbanization on juvenile delinquency and the juvenile justice system in the Philippines.
Abstract
Urbanization nurtures delinquency and thus impacts the juvenile justice system by reducing land spaces for recreation and spacious residential living. Psychological and sociological influences undermine constructive familial influences and the assumption of responsibility for neighborhood conditions and behaviors. Some benefits of urbanization are the availability of a larger work force and the development of fast and efficient communications and transportation. An examination of the effects of urbanization on the juvenile justice system focuses on the community, the police, the prosecutors, the court, and the correctional and rehabilitation centers. Suggestions for countering the negative impact of urbanization on the juvenile justice system include increased funding for juvenile justice, youth participation in the administration of government, youth divisions for all government agencies, and improved training for juvenile justice personnel.
