Annotation

This analysis of existing procedures for coordinating the activities of youth organizations and United Nations agencies proposes several new approaches to developing closer cooperation.

Abstract

Such cooperation might stimulate participation by more youth, thereby helping international youth organizations become more effective instruments for youth than they are today. Despite many adults' negative attitudes toward youth, organizations in the United Nations system and international youth organizations are increasingly trying to cooperate in dealing with world problems. This cooperation takes the form of consultative relationships, participation by youth organizations at conferences and meetings, and informal contacts. Recommended improvements include the creation of youth liaison committees, improving coordination among existing youth officers in the various branches of the United Nations Secretariat, consultation with youth organizations prior to initiating projects, early circulation of conference agendas and reports, and establishment of an efficient document service. Other recommendations include continuing the Youth Caucus in New York and the Geneva Informal Group and establishing a special fund to support these efforts.
