The overall goal of the workshop was to create a professional network committed to crime prevention in the Ottawa-Carleton area, with the Department of Criminology of the University of Ottawa playing a vital role, and a specific objective was the formulation of potential action programs with evaluation components built in.
Abstract
Workshop presentations included a recounting of some experiences for the United States in implementing and evaluating crime prevention and a cooperative prevention model for effective approaches to crime control in Ottawa. Other prevention models presented focused on the Youth Services Bureau of Ottawa-Carleton and the police social work program of the Gloucester police. The Post-15 program of the Youth Services Bureau was presented as a model for a positive community program, and a practical approach to crime prevention strategies was considered, along with a paper on implementing crime prevention. Some issues considered were the identification of a crime problem within a community, the creation of crime-prevention awareness within a community, making police departments more open to the public, and the production of a system of rewards for crime prevention. Other considerations were the optimum time to intervene to prevent the development of delinquency patterns in juveniles and the criteria for distinguishing between crime control and crime prevention activities. The appendixes contain a letter of invitation to participants, the workshop program, and a list of participants.
