Abstract
The Large Jail Network Meeting was held from March 23 - 25, 2014 at the National Institute of Corrections (NIC), National Corrections Academy in Aurora, CO. Highlights from topics discussed during the meeting include the following: coordinated efforts to gather and use intelligence from and about inmates can result in safer jails and stronger crime control in the community; mentally ill and/or suicidal inmates should be placed in special housing when needed; officers who have crisis intervention skills are less like to resort to using force to gain inmate compliance; and detention officers experience high rates of stress because of the nature of their work. This meeting was held as part of NIC's efforts to promote and provide a means for member agencies to share information about what works in their facilities. Session topics during the meeting were 1) I.L.P.: Intelligence-led Policing in a Detention Environment; 2) Segregation of High Risk Medial and Mentally Ill Inmates; 3) Staff Misconduct; 4) Crisis Intervention Teams; 5) Counterfeiting and Jails: The National IPR Coordination Center; and 6) Staff Wellness: Managing/Implementing Organizational Change. The meeting also included an open forum discussion on a variety of topics. A list of topics for future meetings is included in the document. Appendixes
