These 25 proceedings papers deal with a wide variety of issues relating to correctional policies, procedures, management, and programs.
Abstract
Following a discussion of the challenges facing corrections, various leadership and management topics are considered, including the role of the leader/manager, the importance of planning, sex-role stereotypes in promotion, resource allocations, the special contributions women can make to corrections, and the benefits of using nonprofit organizations in correctional service delivery. Trends in local corrections are delineated, and a systems approach to planning local correctional services and facilities is presented. Also considered is the problem of litigation in women's corrections. The need for cooperation between corrections industries and vocational education is emphasized. A series of papers then addresses issues in special programs for American Indians, female homicide offenders, the offender's family, and visitation. Additional papers examine the use of computers in a delinquency prevention program, public attitudes toward corrections, community service programs, and the use of female correctional officers in male facilities. Correctional standards and accreditation also are discussed. Finally, technical workshops and seminars examine jail architecture, early release screening, and objective instruments for offender classification.
