Institute papers discuss victimology from the perspectives of world developments in the field; policy, services, and social control; psychological and political perspectives; private violence; and stranger assaults. Conclusions and recommendations are given.
Abstract
Topics reviewed include victimization surveys in Latin America, victimization and victimological orientations in Italy, victimology in Australia, and social control and victimization. Victim compensation plans, problems of victim-witness assistance programs, social change and victimization, and black-on-black homicide are explored. Sexual violence, the plight of the juvenile prostitute as both victim and offender, a comparison of rapists and the general public, and several studies of family violence are examined. Papers on stranger assaults cover resistance and injury in nonfatal assaults, forensic psychiatric testimonies concerning sexual aggression, and sexual assault trauma. Conclusions and recommendations focus on an analysis of Institute objectives, specifically looking at theoretical perspectives as well as research and methodology. A conceptual framework for victimological research is described, while the final paper critically examines the issue of victimology as a science. Some tables and references are provided with individual papers. For separate papers, see NCJ 93497 to 93514.
