This study identifies community and professional resources that play a role in combating, treating, and preventing crime and those that provide services to crime victims in the black townships of Umlazi and KwaMashu in South Africa.
Abstract
Data were obtained through unstructured interviews with heads of organizations, institutions, and clubs in the two townships as well as with people directly involved in organizations outside the community which serve the two townships. After a study of the relevant literature, a schedule was drawn up to identify the various community resources. The resources identified were in the fields of education, social agencies, youth involvement, developmental programs, and resources for crime victims. Findings indicate that both townships have resources that render services that target crime control, the treatment and rehabilitation of offenders, crime prevention, and crime victim services. The study did not determine whether or not the services are effective. Evaluative studies could provide such data. 26 references
