STUDY OF YOUTHS WHO ABSCONDED FROM NEW YORK DIVISION FOR YOUTH (DFY) EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAMS DURING 1971 AND EARLY 1972 REPRESENTING PART OF A LARGER STUDY OF THE RELATION OF PERSONALITY AND BACKGROUND VARIABLES TO OUTCOMES.
Abstract
A PROFILE OF TYPICAL ABSCONDERS FROM DFY PROGRAMS WAS CONSTRUCTED BY COMPARING THE SOCIO-DEMOGRAPHIC VARIABLES OF ABSCONDERS WITH TOTAL STUDY POPULATION, COMPARING PERSONALITY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ABSCONDERS AND PROGRAM GRADUATES, AND BY STUDYING THE RELATIONSHIP OF LENGTH OF TIME IN PROGRAM, PROGRAM ADJUSTMENT BEHAVIORS, SOCIAL CLIMATE OF THE FACILITY, SOCIAL DEMOGRAPHIC VARIABLES, AND INTERACTION EFFECTS TO ABSCONDING. THE TYPICAL DFY ABSCONDER WAS FOUND TO BE WHITE, POSSESSING AN ABNORMAL PERSONALITY SCALE RATED HIGH ON MANIFEST AGGRESSION, DISSATISFIED WITH THE PROGRAM, AND INEFFECTIVE IN PEER RELATIONSHIPS. FOR THE MAIN STUDY, SEE NCJ-35771. FOR RELATED STUDIES, SEE NCJ-35782 AND 35783.
