As part of an effort to identify currently incarcerated offenders who might be given intensive supervision in the who might be given intensive supervision in the community as an alternative to institutionalization, this South Carolina study profiles three inmate cohorts incarcerated for specified nonviolent offenses.
Abstract
The inmates profiled were incarcerated for the following targeted offenses: larceny, fraudulent activity, embezzlement, stolen property, damage to property, obscene materials, family offenses, liquor, drunkenness, antitrust, tax revenue, conservation, and gambling. The three cohorts were distinguished by (1) admission during fiscal year 1982, (2) release during fiscal year 1982, and (3) in the inmate population on June 30, 1982. For those admitted to prison during fiscal year 1982, the profile data cover race, sex, sentence length, offense distribution, and the number and distribution of prior offenses. The profile data for inmates in the prison population on June 30, 1982, encompasses race, sex, and sentence length distribution. For the cohort released during fiscal year 1982, data pertain to race, sex, sentence length distribution, and average time served. In addition to tabular data, a narrative summary of the data is provided.
