A PROGRAM ANALYSIS AND REVIEW (PAR) WAS CONDUCTED IN SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y., IN AUGUST 1975. STRENGTHS AND PROBLEMS ARE DISCUSSED AND RECOMMENDATIONS ARE MADE BASED ON A CHECKLIST OF 521 PAR ITEM-STANDARDS.
Abstract
THIS SUMMARY OF THE FULL EVALUATION REPORT DOES NOT CONTAIN GRAPHS AND FIGURES; IT IS AN OVERVIEW OF OPERATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS. THE EVALUATION FOUND THAT THE SUFFOLK COUNTY PROBATION DEPARTMENT IS MEETING OR EXCEEDING NEW YORK STATE STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES FOR PREPARING PRESENTENCING AND OTHER COURT REPORTS, MAINTAINING CASE RECORDS, AND PROVIDING ROUTINE SERVICES. HOWEVER, LACK OF STAFF HAS MEANT SOME DELAY IN SENDING IN STATE REPORTS AND IN UTILIZING OUTSIDE SOCIAL SERVICES. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT COMPUTERIZATION OF ROUTINE REPORTS BE CONSIDERED. ALSO, DIFFERENTIAL ALLOCATION OF CASELOAD WILL ALLOW MORE EFFECTIVE USE OF TRAINED PROBATION OFFICERS. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT NEW CLIENTS AND THOSE WHO NEED CLOSE SUPERVISION BE SEEN AT LEAST WEEKLY BUT THAT CASES WHICH REQUIRE LESS SUPERVISION BE SEEN LESS FREQUENTLY. PHYSICAL CHANGES IN DEPARTMENT FACILITIES ARE ALSO RECOMMENDED TO GIVE THE PROBATION OFFICERS PRIVACY AND TO IMPROVE SURROUNDINGS. (GLR)
