BOOKLET ANNOUNCES AVAILABLE FUNDING FOR THE PROGRAM AND PRESENTS RATIONALE FOR THE PROGRAM.
Abstract
IN MARCH 1975 LEAA MADE AVAILABLE $8.5 MILLION FOR PUBLIC AND PRIVATE AGENCIES TO APPLY FOR PROGRAMS TO BE FUNDED THAT WOULD KEEP JUVENILE STATUS OFFENDERS -- TRUANTS, RUNAWAYS, AND INCORRIGIBLES -- OUT OF DETENTION FACILITIES. THE GOAL OF THE PROGRAM WAS TO HALT DETENTION OF STATUS OFFENDERS WITHIN TWO YEARS. JUVENILE STATUS OFFENDERS ARE THOSE PERSONS WHOSE OFFENSES WOULD NOT BE CONSIDERED CRIMINAL IF COMMITTED BY ADULTS. PROGRAM RESPONSES THAT WOULD ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM MIGHT INCLUDE IN-HOME PLACEMENT, SHELTER HOMES, SMALL GROUP HOMES, FOSTER HOMES AND OTHER COMMUNITY-BASED ALTERNATIVES.
