Under the effective continuum of developmental community-based programs and services for at-risk children, this final chapter highlights issues for considerations as the day treatment program moves from design to implementation, strategies for delivering effective services, and the identification of effective practices in the management of a program.

Abstract

In completing the discussion of programs that exemplify a continuum of developmentally appropriate services for youth from prenatal to young adulthood, this final chapter discusses how day treatment integrates into the existing environment via collaboration with other service entities. When there are students actually in the program, treatment should be rooted in proven methods and be delivered after comprehensive assessment; there should be continuous case management and specific needs of community youth should be met. This chapter makes the point that program monitoring and evaluation be part of the structure of everyday operation. The main focus in this final chapter is on the more practical concerns of running a day treatment center with the ultimate accomplishment, program expansion. Expansion can occur when the idea of the program moves from startup, to stabilization, to addressing the needs of the entire target clientele, thereby making the kind of difference the community expects and needs.
