This report provides data on the program use of the Amity RighTurn Substance Abuse Treatment Program for inmates at the California Department of Corrections R.J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego, Calif.
Abstract
Amity RighTurn is a voluntary 9- to 12-month intensive therapeutic community in-prison substance abuse program for 200 male inmates, with continuation services for program participants paroled to San Diego County. The program, which enrolled its first participants in November 1990, reached maximum capacity in March 1991. Data presented in this report describe program use and race/ethnicity of participants for the period of October 1991 through June 1993. The data source for this report was the monthly Amity RighTurn in-prison end-of-month census statistics that are broken down by race/ethnicity. The data show that full program capacity was maintained half of the time from July 1991 through September 1991. Program use began decreasing during the October - December 1991 quarter and decreased even further during the January - March 1992 quarter. Data show considerable variation in the number of participants by race/ethnicity group for individual months; participants enter and exit the program each month. Classifications of ethnic groups are African- American/Black, Hispanic/Latino, White, and Other. During October - December 1991, African-American/Blacks comprised 43 percent of the participants, followed by whites at 35 percent. As of April - June 1993, African-American/Blacks represented 35 percent and whites 34 percent. Amity RighTurn and corrections program staff have made concentrated efforts to attract to and retain Hispanic/Latinos in the program. During January - March 1992, this group comprised approximately 18 percent of participants. By April - June 1992, the percentage had increased to 26 percent and has not decreased below that level. 3 tables, 5 figures, and appended description of the program
