Abstract
THE MOVEMENT AWAY FROM COURT PROCESSING OF STATUS OFFENDERS AND TOWARDS DEINSTITUTIONALIZATION, AS SPECIFIED IN THE JUVENILE JUSTICE AND DELINQUENCY PREVENTION (JJDP) ACT, HAS INCREASED THE DEMAND FOR INFORMATON ON PROGRAMS FOR STATUS OFFENDERS. THIS BIBLIOGRAPHY RESPONDS TO THIS DEMAND AND GIVES AN OVERVIEW OF ALTERNATIVES TO DETENTION/INSTITUTIONALIZATION, DISCUSSES DIVERSION AND YOUTH SERVICES BUREAUS, AND DESCRIBES VARIOUS GUIDES AND DIRECTORIES LISTING PROGRAMS FOR RUNAWAYS. IN ADDITION, IT PROVIDES INFORMATION ON ALTERNATIVE SCHOOLS PROGRAMS AND AIDS TO FINANCING THESE AND OTHER PROGRAMS. THE NATIONAL COUNCIL ON CRIME AND DELINQUENCY (NCCD) VIDEOTAPE AND FILM ENTITLED 'THE INNOCENT CRIMINAL' IS MENTIONED AS AN EXPOSE ON THE PLIGHT OF STATUS OFFENDERS, AND SEVERAL STATUS OFFENDER PROGRAMS ARE IDENTIFIED AS INFORMATION SOURCES. THESE INCLUDE THE MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD., CAITHNESS SHELTER HOME, THE NCCD YOUTH CENTER, AND THE ALTERNATIVE INFORMATION AND REFERRAL SERVICE. THE ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY IS DIVIDED INTO SIX SECTIONS: GENERAL, ALTERNATIVES TO DETENTION/INSTITUTIONALIZATION, DIVERSION, YOUTH SERVICE BUREAUS, RUNAWAYS, AND SCHOOL TRUANCY. THE BIBLIOGRAPHY OF OVER 90 ITEMS INCLUDES ANNOTATIONS OF PUBLISHED ARTICLES, BOOKS, AND AGENCY REPORTS DATED BETWEEN 1971 AND 1978. SOME OF THE PROGRAMS, HOWEVER, MAY HAVE CEASED OPERATON WHILE OTHERS ARE FOR JUVENILE DELINQUENTS AS WELL AS JUVENILE STATUS OFFENDERS. (MJW)
